How much should you pay a Babysitter?
According to a survey by UrbanSitter in 2018, the average hourly babysitting rate has climbed to $16.43 for one child, based on a survey of more than 20,000 families across the country. In New York City you can still get away with $15 per hour if you find a high school kid or inexperienced student. For an experienced babysitter the rates are usually between $18 and $20 for one child. For special skills like someone with an education in early childhood care, CPR or even a desired language, you can expect to pay around $25 per hour.
Should you tip?
About 55% of parents in the survey add tip and many include additional perks like food or online ordering service and additional compensation for a cab after certain hours.
No wonder most parents (60%) told UrbanSitter they spend at least $1,000 a year on babysitters, with 38% of families hiring a sitter at least once a week.
Who pays for extras like museum passes and transportation?
If you send your babysitter on an excursion with your child(ren) you are expected to pay for transportation and the entrance fees, theater tickets and so on. If you have a regular babysitter it might make sense to consider season passes for her/him for example to the zoo or children’s museum in your town.
